Last week my family attended the funeral of my brother-in-law's Grandmother, a beautiful person who will be greatly missed. I was glad to have had a chance to sit and talk with her at a party in early December, and she was getting such a kick out of her great-grandchildren and the things they were saying...

The service was beautiful, but I took care of Blaine at the point where he lost interest in the coloring books and toy cars and was getting too loud, so we went out of the church and strolled up and down a ramp in the hallway about 50 times. We did some humming of the hymns we could hear and he liked the effects of condensation making outlines when he pressed his warm hands on the cold windows. I was glad to be there as a babysitter for such a difficult moment for my sister and her husband.

At the cemetery, we were encouraged to take a rose from the arrangements, as they would have frozen, anyway and there were plenty of greens and flowers left. They were a beautiful color and lasted a long time.

Last night, while doing a grocery run for my parents, I bought some tulips, and arranged a large vase of them and replaced the wilted roses from the the bud vases, which my Mother and I had in our rooms, with some fresh and colorful flowers.

It's been an emotional journey since a bit before Christmas and I won't try and put that into words... nor would I want to...

This picture wasn't a set-up, I looked into the sink as I was working at the task and then grabbed my camera. For several reasons, personal as well as aesthetic, it's one of my favorite photos I've taken in a while.

grandpa's funeral

grandpa's funeral

I know what you're thinking. Who takes pictures at a funeral? We did, mainly because it was a very touching and moving thing.

This was Grandpa Al, my dad's father. We were so close to him. I lived across the street from him and grandma almost my whole life and then moved into an apartment in their house after my daughter was born. I have the greatest stories about Grandpa.

He died in 1992, before my son ever got to meet him.

He was a volunteer fireman for over 50 years. I'm going to say more like 70, and he was revered within the department. Everyone loved Grandpa Al. He was a good man, a devoted firefighter and a party kind of guy.

The entire department came to his wake and took turns standing honor guard outside the funeral home (which they do for all firemen). Then his coffin was placed on the back of a fire truck, surrounded by flowers and as we drove to the cemetery, we first passed the firehouse, where two ladder trucks had formed an arch across the street and the firemen were out there saluting as we drove by. They did the same thing as we drove into the cemetery.

I'll never forget that. It reminded me of the legacy Grandpa left behind him.

Damn, I still miss him.
